Manchester United‘s chances of landing Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller have been boosted, according to the Daily Star, who cite the concerns of Allianz Arena CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge with regards to the financial pulling power Premier League sides currently possess.
Louis van Gaal found himself short of striking options with Robin van Persie having been sold to Fenerbahce, Radamel Falcao having departed, and Adnan Januzaj leaving for Borussia Dortmund, and he moved to bring in AS Monaco’s Anthony Martial, at great expense, on transfer deadline day.
The Daily Star claims that United had made a massive £73m bid for 25-year-old German international Muller over the summer but Bayern Munich turned down the bid.
Van Gaal has seen his side manage just three goals in their opening four Premier fixtures and as such, the addition of a proven goal-scorer such as Muller would certainly have improved United’s chances of securing major silverware this season.
Bringing teenager Martial in may or may not prove an immediate success, although clearly placing such faith in an inexperienced commodity carries some element of risk.

Rummenigge has highlighted his concerns regarding the spending power Premier League sides currently retain and expects the gulf to grow, stating: “Their income from the TV pot is much, much bigger than our income in Germany or Italy or in Spain, so we have to find different philosophies which will not be very easy,
“The tsunami wave will probably get bigger next year because the TV pot will be bigger than this year,” he continued.
“So the transfer market will be totally dominated by the English clubs, that is a fact.”
Louis van Gaal knows Muller well from his time in charge of the German giants and the lanky attacker has proven himself adept in both wide and central striking roles, netting 20+ goals in each of the past three campaigns and has scored five goals in his opening three Bundesliga appearances so far this season.
