Liverpool transfer news: Reds plotting to offload fan favourite in player-swap deal to snare Serie A hotshot

during the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Liverpool at Britannia Stadium on August 9, 2015 in Stoke on Trent, England.

Liverpool could make a surprise move to sign AC Milan winger Jeremy Menez in the January transfer window, with the Reds tipped to offload Lucas Leiva as part of the deal, according to Fichajes, via the Express.

Liverpool could do with an improvement to their options out wide, with Raheem Sterling leaving for Manchester City during the summer and the club yet to truly replace him. New signings James Milner and Roberto Firmino could both do a job on the flanks, but are not really the same style of pacey, goalscoring wide-player.

Menez was hugely impressive in Serie A last season, scoring 16 goals from out wide to establish himself as one of the best goalscoring midfielders in Europe.

The French international is on the club’s radar again ahead of the January window, and Lucas could be offered to the Italian giants to help push the move through, despite the Brazilian becoming an important part of Brendan Rodgers’s side this term.

Lucas has not always been a regular for Liverpool due to several injury setbacks in his career, but the experienced 28-year-old has often been popular among the Anfield crowd for his committed displays and no-nonsense approach to protecting the back four.

However, with players like Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Joe Allen also able to play in that role, a new winger like Menez might be a bigger priority for Rodgers as he looks to get his side back into the Premier League top four, meaning that Lucas could feasibly be sacrificed.
