England international Phil Jones has given Manchester United a massive boost by returning to full training, Mirror Sport reports.

The 23-year-old is yet to feature for club or country this season after complaining about a calf problem in the build up to the Red Devils opener against Tottenham Hotspur last month and it was later discovered by the club’s medical staff that he was suffering from thrombosis.

That had sidelined Jones for United’s opening six games of the new campaign, however, he is now closing on a return to first-team action after making a full recovery but will not be considered for the huge clash against bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

The former Blackburn Rovers player faces a fight to regain his place at the heart of United’s defence upon his return as the pairing of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind has managed to keep four clean sheets in six games.
