Chelsea want to sign £17m-rated Premier League midfielder in the January transfer window

Moussa Sissoko - Newcastle United

The summer transfer window may have closed earlier this week, but reigning Barclays Premier League champions Chelsea are reportedly already making plans to strengthen their squad when it reopens in January.

According to reports in French publication Foot Mercato [via Star Sport], Blues boss Jose Mourinho is preparing a £17million bid for Newcastle United midfield powerhouse Moussa Sissoko after seeing his attempts to sign the 26-year-old this summer rebuffed.

The West London outfit were linked with a number of central midfielders during the window, including Juventus star Paul Pogba [via Mail Sport] and highly-rated youngster Giannelli Imbula [via Express Sport], however, the club were unable to lure either player to Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho does have a number of options to play in the engine room until the New Year and he will be hoping his first-choice pairing of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas can rediscover their best form to help the club overcome their sluggish start to the new season.
