Manchester United look to complete £24.5m winger signing as agent is brought in to negotiate transfer

Manchester United will look to complete the signing of Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan with ‘super-agent’ Jorge Mendes being brought in to help secure the transfer, according to Portuguese source O Jogo via the Daily Star.

Louis van Gaal’s side have looked fairly toothless thus far this season, netting just two goals in three Premier League fixtures, and could well do with the addition of more of a cutting edge in the final third.

Argentine international Gaitan is in fine form having helped Benfica to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles over the past two seasons, and his form has helped him to secure a prominent role in Gerard Martino’s national team set-up.

Gaitan has proven a big success since moving to Portugal in 2010 and would offer van Gaal a fresh option up front. The former Boca Juniors man can play either out wide or in a central role, and the Daily Star claims the 27-year-old has a £24.5m release clause written into his contract.

Van Gaal has used a host of wide-attacking options this term with Juan Mata, Ashley Young, Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj all featuring thus far, and the Dutch manager may feel he needs a fresh alternative in the form of Gaitan.

United successfully sold Angel Di Maria to PSG in a deal said to be worth £44.3m (via Sky Sports) and as such have the funds to bring in Gaitan.
