Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has slammed Louis van Gaal‘s handling of David De Gea‘s Real Madrid transfer saga, reports the Daily Express.
The Dutchman was number one at Old Trafford for six years, making 266 appearances, and is unhappy with how his countryman is dealing with the rumours surrounding his successor. The 44-year-old is also keen to make sure the United boss doesn’t get an easy way out of the situation, by keeping Jasper Cillessen at Ajax.
“It is obvious that there is a lot more going on in the background,” he said, “There is stuff happening between Louis and De Gea. I fear he (De Gea) is going to face ten very awkward months. As a former United employee and goalkeeper of the club, I find it astonishing that I see three established goalkeepers – De Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Victor Valdes – in the stand watching United play.
“Also, Sergio Romero is a free agent who has hardly played a league game over the past two years, yet is in the starting line-up. Cillessen’s name is being mentioned as a replacement for De Gea but, as as a director at Ajax, I am working hard to keep our best player.”
De Gea has been linked to the Bernabeu throughout the summer, and with only one year left on his current contract it is the last time the Red Devils can make any money for their star player. However, their manager has insisted that the 24-year-old is going to stay with the team, despite playing Sergio Romero ahead of him in the starting line up in their first three matches of the season.
