Arsenal to register £35.5m bid for South American goal-machine

Arsenal are readying a €50m (£35.5m) bid for PSG forward Edinson Cavani as an alternative to long-term target Karim Benzema, according to Fichajes (via the Metro).

28-year-old Uruguayan forward Cavani is one of world football’s most consistent goal-scorers and a player whose physical presence could prove ideal for a move to the Premier League.

Cavani has bagged 56 goals in two seasons in the French capital, and this despite the fact that Laurent Blanc often plays the South American in a wide attacking role in order to accommodate Swedish veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Arsene Wenger could well do with a prolific forward to spearhead his Arsenal attack with current first-choice starter Olivier Giroud proving only a moderate success since his move to the Emirates Stadium three years ago.

Giroud has scored 58 goals in 136 appearances for Arsenal, and back-up options Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck have proven even less consistent when called upon to fill a central striking berth.

Prior to his move to the Parc des Princes, Cavani netted an astonishing 104 goals in three seasons at Napoli and is rightly considered one of the most feared predatory finishers in the game.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with an ongoing push to sign Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema (Italian sports journalist Emanuele Giulianelli via the Daily Star) but Cavani would prove a more than capable alternative if such a move fails.
