Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole could soon be a free agent, following reports in Guardian Sport that Serie A giants AS Roma are considering cancelling the player’s contract this summer.
Should the ex-England international find himself searching for a new club in the near future, here a five potential destinations for the 34-year-old.
A return to the Gunners can safely be ruled out…
1) Chelsea
While a move to the Emirates Stadium for Cole is all but impossible, a return to West London is more of a possibility as manager Jose Mourinho is in the transfer market for a new left-back.
2) Manchester United
As doubts over Luke Shaw’s long-term fitness remain, a move for Cole would not only increase the quality in the squad at Old Trafford but also allow the youngster to learn from arguably the best ever English left-back.
3) Liverpool
With Alberto Moreno and Jose Enrique both failing to nail down the left-back spot at Anfield, Cole would represent an excellent piece of business for manager Brendan Rodgers as his experience would be vital for a squad that has lost Steven Gerrard over the summer.
4) Paris Saint-Germain
Ironically the arrival of Lucas Digne at the Stadio Olimpico could spell the end of Cole in Italy and he could end up replacing the French starlet at the Parc des Princes stadium.
Similar to that of former teammate David Beckham’s move to France late in his career, it would give Cole the chance to bow out at the top.
5) Retire
Cole enjoyed a extremely successful career in England after winning every single major club honour during spells with the Gunners and Blues and doesn’t really have anything left to prove to anybody.
