Man City v Chelsea player-by-player comparison.
As we prepare for Man City v Chelsea in this weekend’s stand-out Premier League clash, here’s a player-by-player battle of their best XIs – have last season’s runners-up closed the gap on the champions?
GK: Joe Hart vs Thibaut Courtois
Two of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League, but the Chelsea man narrowly wins this battle for being generally more consistent in the last couple of years.
Vote: Courtois
DR: Pablo Zabaleta vs Branislav Ivanovic
Two superb right-backs, it is again a close call but a narrow win for Chelsea’s Ivanovic for his all-action displays and consistency in helping the Blues to major honours.
Vote: Ivanovic
DL: Aleksandar Kolarov vs Cesar Azpilicueta
Once more, it’s a Chelsea win at left-back as Azpilicueta is a far more solid and consistent performer than Kolarov, who is slightly overrated for the occasional wondergoal from a free-kick.
Vote: Azpilicueta

DC: Vincent Kompany vs John Terry
Although Vincent Kompany was once one of the very best in the world, Chelsea’s John Terry has outshone him in the last few years and remains the boss of Premier League centre-backs after a great career.
Vote: Terry
DC: Eliaquim Mangala vs Gary Cahill
It’s a landslide in defence, with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill certainly far better than erratic Manchester City youngster Eliaquim Mangala, who has much to improve on.
Vote: Cahill
MC: Fernandinho vs Nemanja Matic
For all Fernandinho’s qualities, he’s still got to do it more regularly for City and has nothing on Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic right now.
Vote: Matic
MC: Yaya Toure vs Cesc Fabregas
A first point for City, with Yaya Toure looking superb so far this season and possibly back to his best, which puts him above most players in the world, let alone the out-of-form Cesc Fabregas.
Vote: Toure
AMR: Jesus Navas vs Willian
Two very different players, but City winger Jesus Navas is certainly the more exciting and skillful attacker, even if he can go missing sometimes, whereas it’s unclear what exactly Willian offers.
Vote: Navas
AML: Raheem Sterling vs Eden Hazard
Two players to watch in this weekend’s Man City v Chelsea clash, as both can be match-winners, but at the moment Eden Hazard is certainly far ahead of his rival in terms of end-product.
Vote: Hazard
AMC: David Silva vs Oscar
At his best, there’s no stopping David Silva, who is the more complete player in this battle with Oscar, who is arguably a weak point in the Chelsea attack.
Vote: Silva
FC: Sergio Aguero vs Diego Costa
Finally, it’s another City win here as Sergio Aguero outscored Diego Costa last season and looks the more well-rounded striker, giving City the edge in attack, but Chelsea in defence.
Vote: Aguero
