Vincent Kompany labels top Man City transfer target and Bundesliga star as ‘phenomenal’

Man City captain Vincent Kompany has backed the club’s pursuit of his international teammate Kevin De Bruyne, Guardian Sport reports.

The Citizens have been heavily linked with a move for the VfL Wolfsburg playmaker all summer following his sensational form for the Bundesliga outfit last season, where he registered an amazing 20 assists in the league and also netted in the club’s German Cup triumph over Borussia Dortmund.

Recent reports via Sky Sports suggest City have lodged a £47 million bid for the 24-year-old in hopes that he can be included in the squad for the game against his former club Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium this weekend, and Kompany admits his compatriot would be a welcome addition to the squad:

“Let’s put it this way, he definitely wouldn’t make the team weaker. Any team he goes to he will make them stronger,” the defender said.

“He’s a phenomenal player. A complete player,” Kompany added.

Last season’s Premier League runners-up have been relatively quiet in the transfer market by their usual standards, but they have spent a club-record fee to lure Raheem Sterling away from Liverpool [via the club’s official website] and spent a further £8 million on his fellow England international teammate Fabian Delph [via Telegraph Sport]

Youngsters Patrick Roberts and Enes Unal have likely been earmarked as prospects for the future, but if they are successful in landing De Bruyne before the transfer window closes next month, then an attacking trio of the Belgian, David Silva and Sterling behind the lone striker Sergio Aguero is likely to install the Sky Blues as hot favourites for the Premier League crown.

They kicked off the new season in stunning fashion by sweeping aside West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at the Hawthorns, thanks to goals from David Silva, Yaya Toure and Kompany, which has left a sense among many that the Citizens are fully focused on reclaiming the title come May.
