Arsenal enter transfer battle with Liverpool to land £50m German star

Arsenal have entered the transfer battle with Liverpool for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus.

The Reds were stated as having etched the versatile midfielder’s name on their summer wish list, but they were expected to struggle to clinch his signature with Los Blancos also said to be in the race, the Liverpool Echo reported.

And in an update on the transfer speculation, according to the Telegraph, Arsene Wenger joined the race for the Germany international.

The British newspaper claim that Reus favours a move to the Premier League, and suggests that he could be open to aWestfalenstadion exit this summer.

Liverpool, the Telegraph report, are said to have made contact with the 26-year-old; however, Arsenal are preparing to frustrate their English rivals, with Wenger rumoured to believe that Reus could be his ‘superstar’ signing of the summer window.

It is stated that the German would likely cost around £50m – which the north London giants could afford with ease after club director Lord Harris [via the Daily Mail] said that there was £200m available ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

What’s more, as also said by the Telegraph, Reus is close friends with international team-mate and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil – who could help persuade the winger to make the journey to the Emirates Stadium.

With Liverpool having signed attackers James Milner, Danny Ings, Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke [via Sky Sports], Rodgers is certainly set to field a hugely revamped side next season, and the possible addition of Reus could see Daniel Sturridge question his role with the Merseyside heavyweights upon his return from injury.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have made just one major signing – in clinching Petr Cech from Chelsea in a £10m deal [via BBC Sport] – and it is expected that they are looking to further strengthen outfield.

Reus could be the man they want.
