Manchester City‘s pursuit of highly-rated attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne appears to be coming to an end following Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg’s indication that they won’t be cashing in on the Belgian international during the current transfer window.
City flexed their financial power in the transfer market last week by splashing out over £55 million on England international duo Raheem Sterling [via Independent Sport] and Fabian Delph [via Guardian Sport] from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively.
Those two additions have not stopped speculation linking De Bruyne with a move to the Etihad Stadium as he is reportedly high on manager Manuel Pellegrini’s list of targets as the Chilean coach looks to assemble a squad capable of winning the league title in the upcoming campaign.
The Belgian, who joined Wolfsburg from Chelsea in the 2014 January transfer window, is reportedly also on the radar of reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain [via Mail Sport] after performing brilliantly in the Bundesliga last season.
In 34 league appearances, De Bruyne scored 10 goals and, more impressively, registered 20 assists as Die Wolfe enjoyed a successful 2014-15 campaign by finishing second in the league and winning the German Cup by beating Borussia Dortmund in the final, where the 24-year-old was once again on target.
He also showed he can thrive on the European stage by scoring five and registering the same number of assists as the German side reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League last year. His threat against Serie A outfit Napoli was largely nullified across both legs, demonstrating that he still has areas to improve before he can be considered world-class.
It’s no shock to see him linked with a return to England, however, it appears that a move will not happen this summer as the chief of the Wolfsburg supervisory board Francisco Garcia told German media outlet Kicker that the club don’t want to sell their prized asset:
“We don’t want to sell anyone, including Kevin,” Garcia said [via Mirror Sport].
“Of course the player has to want to stay, but we’re not worried about that at the moment,” he added.
