Following reports in Guardian Sport on Thursday evening that Jonny Evans is set to follow Robin van Persie, Nani and Tom Cleverley out of the door at Manchester United, we turn our attentions to five players who could be next in line to face the chop from manager Louis van Gaal before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
5) James Wilson
The Red Devils are expected to bring in a new centre-forward during the summer and have been linked with moves for Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski [via Sky Sports] and Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani [via Guardian Sport].
Should either one of the two strikers arrive, then Wilson is the most likely casualty and he has been linked with a loan switch to Premier League rivals West Brom [via Mirror Sport].
4) Javier Hernandez
The Mexican forward’s future is uncertain at the minute after his loan spell at La Liga giants Real Madrid was not made permanent and it would appear he is a target for United’s fierce rivals Liverpool [via Star Sport].
Much like the situation regarding Wilson, if the Red Devils are able to sign a centre-forward this summer then it’s likely to spell the end of Hernandez at Old Trafford.
3) Angel Di Maria
Much was expected of the Argentinian winger following his move from Los Blancos for a club record fee of £59.7million last summer, however, he couldn’t quite replicate the form that helped the Spanish giants win the Champions League in the 2013-14 campaign.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keen to rescue the 27-year-old from his spell in England and manager van Gaal has already hinted that the decision rests with the player [via Guardian Sport].
2) Rafael
Following the arrival of Italian international Matteo Darmian it seemed Rafael didn’t have a future at Old Trafford, then after being left out of the pre-season squad for their tour of the United States it became quite clear that Brazilian will not figure in van Gaal’s plans this season.
He has been linked with moves to various clubs in throughout Europe and a switch to Serie A giants AS Roma looks the most likely [via Independent Sport].
1) Victor Valdes
After van Gaal’s comment earlier in the week [via BBC Sport], it would be a huge surprise if the former Barcelona goalkeeper is still at Old Trafford when the transfer window closes.
A swift return to La Liga seems to be a huge possibility as Valencia have reportedly opened talks with the player’s representatives [via Mirror Sport].
