Man Utd transfer blow as French giants rule out proposed £50m swap deal

Paris Saint-Germain have rejected Manchester United’s proposed swap deal involving Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria.

La Parisien reported on Tuesday morning that the Argentina international was prepared to turn his back on Old Trafford after just one season with the club, and had agreed terms on a five-year contract with Laurent Blanc’s side.

The French newspaper suggested that a transfer fee was all that needed to be settled before the move could be confirmed, with the Red Devils holding out for €65m (£46m) – €5m more than PSG had offered.

In a further update, the Express claimed that the Premier League giants would be willing to sanction Di Maria’s exit if Cavani was included in the agreement – with the report stating that, while valuing the winger at £50m, they would be satisfied with a straight swap deal.

However, according to the Daily Star, the Ligue 1 champions will not entertain any such offer that sees the Uruguay international head to Manchester.

PSG, the English tabloid state, were keen on luring the 27-year-old to the Parc des Princes last summer, but lost out to United as a consequence of Financial Fair Play restrictions.

A year later, nonetheless, Les Parisiens still remain interested; however, in the same manner in which Real Madrid have been left frustrated by Louis van Gaal’s digging of his heels over their wish to sign David De Gea [via Marca], it seems that PSG’s want to secure the signature of Di Maria could carry a similar narrative this summer.

The departure of Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce [via BBC Sport] suggests that a striker may now have become a priority signing for van Gaal, and Cavani could be considered a direct – and perhaps superior – replacement to the Netherlands international.

If the PSG forward proves too difficult to prise away from the French capital, reports from the Daily Mail have said that United may consider an offer for Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke.
