Wenger sets sights on Serie A ace.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains keen on improving his defence this summer and is reportedly set to renew his interest in signing AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas, according to the Daily Star.

The Gunners currently have Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel as their three main options in the centre of defence, with youngster Calum Chambers also capable of playing there if needed.

Still, with Mertesacker showing some inconsistent form for the north London giants last season, there’s no question the club could do with another body in there, with Manolas looking a good option after an impressive debut season in Serie A.

The Greek international initially caught Arsenal’s eye last summer, the Star claims, but he ended up moving to the Stadio Olimpico instead on that occasion. However, he could still find his way to the Emirates Stadium as Wenger looks at bringing him in again this year.

It remains to be seen if Roma would consider selling such a key player so soon after signing him, but the Italians have struggled to hold on to star names in the recent past, with the likes of Marquinhos, Erik Lamela and Dani Osvaldo all sold when bids came in for them.

Arsenal have often been seen as a soft touch in defence and there’s no doubt they will have to improve in that area if they are to close the gap on Premier League champions Chelsea, who had the best goals-against record in the English top flight as they won the title last season.
