Johnson is set to follow experienced goalkeeper Shay Given and highly-rated Chelsea youngster Marco van Ginkel through the doors at the Britannia Stadium as manager Mark Hughes looks to improve on last season’s ninth placed finish in the Barclays Premier League.
City could hand Johnson a debut against his former club next month as they open the season against the Reds at home next month in a repeat of the final day fixture last year where they were convincing 6-1 winners.
The 30-year-old spent six seasons with the Merseyside outfit but was allowed to leave on a free after losing his place in the starting XI towards the end of last season.
With the European Championships on the horizon, a strong season for Johnson could see him stake a claim for a spot in the England squad.
