Man Utd boost in £36m Argentine defender chase as Real Madrid concede defeat in transfer battle
The 27-year-old could be a replacement for Angel Di Maria, who has apparently agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain, according to talkSPORT.
Should the Argentina international join the Ligue 1 champions, a hole may need filling in Louis van Gaal’s squad.
Gaitan, who can play on either wing and centrally, could be the perfect man to take over from the unsettled [Manchester Evening News] star.
The Red Devils are willing to let – not one – but two of their players go to the Primeira Liga outfit in order to get their man.
However, with neither having played a significant part last season, it is unlikely that their loss will seriously affect United’s team.
Rafael made just 11 appearances last season, with Antonio Valencia being preferred at right-back. This was particularly surprising given the Brazilian had been a regular under David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson when fit, and Valencia is naturally a midfielder.
Meanwhile, Hernandez was sent out on loan to Real Madrid in the previous campaign. Even though the Mexico international scored seven goals and grabbed four assists in 859 minutes of La Liga action with Los Blancos, he doesn’t appear to have done enough to earn a place in van Gaal’s first team plans. Fierce rivals Liverpool have even been linked with a move, by the Daily Mirror.
