However, with all the talent on display at the Bernabeu, surely the Red Devils could do better than get a 29-year-old with a propensity for red cards in return for one of the best players in the Premier League.
Here are six other players they should try and get instead…
6) Keylor Navas
What could be better than getting a direct replacement for the goalkeeper. Having only made 11 appearances for Los Blancos last season, the Costa Rican could well be interested in a move.
5) Raphael Varane
Why sign a 29-year-old when you could get a 22-year-old who is just as good?
The France international saw himself behind Pepe and Ramos in the pecking order last time round, and as such could be tempted away.
Will possibly become the best centre-back in the world for next decade, which is never a bad start.
4) Isco
It is really a question of whether the forward wants to be part of a great team at the Bernabeu or have one built around him at Old Trafford.
If it’s the latter, then United should make every effort to sign the 23-year-old, who could instantly make them title challengers.
3) Asier Illarramendi
The Red Devils are in need of a defensive midfielder as Michael Carrick isn’t getting any younger at 33-years-old. With Liverpool closing in on on the 25-year-old according to the Metro, should United nip in ahead of their Merseyside rivals?
2) Karim Benzema
With Radamel Falcao’s loan coming to an end and Robin van Persie agreeing a deal with Fenerbahce [The Guardian], a striker is becoming increasingly important for Louis van Gaal.
1) Cristiano Ronaldo
It is very unlikely that Real would even entertain this, but if they did a triumphant return to Old Trafford for the 30-year-old would be almost perfect for United. The Portuguese could well win silverware almost single handedly.
