Chelsea are being tipped to win the race for the signing of Stoke City goalkeeper and Manchester United target Asmir Begovic in a £16m deal, according to the Daily Star.
This story, along with a report in the Daily Express that Aston Villa shot-stopper Shay Given is having a medical with Stoke today, ssuggests that Begovic will be heading to Stamford Bridge this summer to replace the departing Petr Cech, who moved to Arsenal after falling out of favour in Jose Mourinho’s squad last season.
The Star suggests United may also have been looking at Begovic, which makes sense given the Daily Mirror‘s story today that Real Madrid are still dead set on signing Red Devils ‘keeper David de Gea this summer, which would leave the club well short of the quality needed in goal.
Begovic has performed well for Stoke in recent years, showing himself to be one of the finest in his position in Premier League, and capable of shining for a bigger club such as Chelsea, even if only as a backup player.
Thibaut Courtois’ fine form for Mourinho’s side in 2014/15 surely means he will continue as number one, but the arrival of the Bosnian international as his understudy should ease concerns if the Belgian starlet were to get injured or suffer a dip in form.
