Football agent Muzzi Ozcan revealed via his official Twitter account that the Gunners are set to make ‘the transfer of the season’ and with that one post, speculation is sure to increase as to who this mystery player is.
We take a look at six players that Ozcan could be referring to:
Karim Benzema
When naming his ultimate XI, Mesut Ozil noted that his former Real Madrid teammate was the ‘complete striker’; so has Arsene Wenger picked up on that subtle hint and launched a bid for Karim Benzema?
If the Gunners are to win the Premier League title next season then they are going to need a reliable centre-forward that can fire them to glory and the French international certainly fits the bill.
Reports over the weekend [via Metro Sport] claimed that the Gunners are interested in the 27-year-old, so has there been some sort of development?
Mario Gotze
Is it a coincidence that a few days after Gotze’s agent Volker Struth lashed out at Bayern Munich [via Mail Sport] that Ozcan tweet emerges?
Have the Gunners struck a deal with the Bundesliga champions to sign the player who won the World Cup for Germany last summer?
A deal for the 23-year-old, who has been linked with an Emirates Stadium switch [via Mirror Sport] would certainly make sense as he can fill a number of attacking positions and it has been reported that Wenger is a long-time admirer [via Mail Sport].
Angel Di Maria
The Gunners boss is a known admirer of the Manchester United winger having attempted to sign the player twice in the past. Once before Di Maria went to Real Madrid [via BBC Sport] and then again in the 2013 summer transfer window [via Telegraph Sport].
Could Wenger be third time lucky?
Reports in Telegraph Sport surfaced on Wednesday morning that the Frenchman was eyeing a move for the Argentine winger, despite his struggles in England since arriving last summer.
Signing a player from one of the club’s main rivals would certainly be a statement of intent and with Di Maria showing signs of his brilliant best during the Copa America tournament, will he prove to be a success in the Premier League at the Emirates?
Arturo Vidal
A new midfielder is thought to be high on Wenger’s priority list this summer and there has been strong suggestions since the end of last season that Chilean midfielder is the number one target.
Vidal would certainly be a superb signing for the Gunners as he would add extra depth to what is already a talented pool of midfielders at the club.
With captain Mikel Arteta signing a new deal [via Mirror Online] has Wenger turned his attentions to Vidal in order to pair him with international teammate Alexis Sanchez?
During the Copa America, there were several reports in the media, including Independent Sport that claimed a deal would be done after the competition had ended….
Gonzalo Higuain
The Argentine striker looked destined to join the North London outfit in the summer of 2013 [via Guardian Sport] until Wenger switched his attentions in trying to prize Luis Suarez away from Liverpool, but failed with a cheeky £40million plus £1 offer [via Mirror Sport].
Serie A outfit Napoli took advantage of the situation and landed Higuain, who has gone on to score 35 league goals in just two seasons.
He has been linked with a move to London on numerous occasions this summer [via Standard Sport] but is Wenger ready to resurrect a deal for the 27-year-old and reunite him with his former Los Blancos teammate Ozil?
His miss in normal time and poor penalty in the shootout of the Copa America final proves he struggles on the big occasions, but his goal-scoring record would be a welcome addition for a club gunning for the league title this season.
Marco Reus
The immensely talented German winger has somewhat fallen off the radar in the last 12 months as he has suffered with a host of injury problems.
On his day he can be a match-winner and has been heavily linked with a move to the North London outfit in the past [via Telegraph Sport].
Has Wenger finally made an offer for the Borussia Dortmund forward, who is considered as one of the best attacking players in European football?
