Liverpool have reportedly sounded out Barcelona over the possible signing of Spanish international winger Pedro this summer, according to Sport.
The Reds are listed as one of two suitors for the 27-year-old in England, with Premier League rivals Arsenal also interested in pouncing for the out-of-favour attacker, who lost his place in Barca’s starting lineup last season after the arrival of a former Anfield star, Luis Suarez.
Pedro has previously been a key figure in the Barcelona first-team, and has helped the club to a number of major honours in his successful career so far, as well as forming part of Spain squads victorious at the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships.
There’s no doubt that the player would be a fine replacement for Liverpool’s Sterling, with Sport saying the club are putting any deal to sell the England wide-man on hold until they have a replacement lined up, and that Pedro is one of the options being considered.
Despite Arsenal’s interest in the Spanish international, it seems he would favour a move to Merseyside, perhaps with the first-team football he craves more likely there than at the Emirates Stadium, where manager Arsene Wenger has a whole host of talented attacking players to choose from already.
Arsenal did sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona last year, and the Chilean has been a resounding success in north London, but it is his very presence that could limit Pedro’s playing time if he were to follow in his old team-mate’s footsteps, whereas Liverpool are currently well short of quality up front.
