Liverpool contract rebel set for Anfield U-turn; signing imminent

Liverpool star Martin Skrtel is set to sign a new contract next week after doubts over his future at the club, reports the Daily Star.

The defender has already been playing for the Merseyside club for seven years after joining from Zenit St. Petersburg in 2007. He is now set to extend that for three years until 2018, meaning that manager Brendan Rodgers won’t have to worry about the heart of his back line for the foreseeable future.

There had been worries about whether the 30-year-old would stay at Anfield after he branded one of their offers as ‘unacceptable,’ according to Sky Sports.

The centre-back had been unhappy at the deal being based on his performances, despite his importance to the side. However, the Slovakia international doesn’t seem to have let that hold him back from finally agreed to an improved contract.

With the Reds defence coming in for much stick during the last campaign, Skrtel will be hoping that there are some new arrivals for the position this summer. The club have already signed Joe Gomez from Charlton Athletic but it is unlikely that the 18-year-old will go straight in to the team, and links to AS Monaco star Aymen Abdennour [Metro] persist.
