Liverpool ready to offload six in major summer clear-out

The Anfield side hope to find buyers for underperforming members of their squad.

Liverpool are readying moves to offload six first-team squad members as Brendan Rodgers’s side look to make room for summer signings, according to the Daily Star.

The Northern Irish coach has already secured the signings of James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Brazilian playmaker Roberto Firmino, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the Liverpool manager would look to find buyers for less effective members of his squad.

Sebastian Coates

The Uruguayan defender spent time on loan at Sunderland last season, and the Daily Star claim the 24-year-old is set to complete a £4 million move to the Stadium of Light.

Mario Balotelli

The Italian international cost Liverpool £16 million last summer [via BBC Sport] and it’s fair to say the former Manchester City man has proven to be a huge disappointment.

It was always going to prove tough to fill the spot vacated by Luis Suarez, who helped Barcelona to a spectacular treble in his debut season at the Nou Camp, but nonetheless Rodgers couldn’t have expected Balotelli to prove quite so ineffective.

The forward managed just one goal in 15 Premier League appearances and one wonders how much Liverpool could recoup of their original outlay in the forward.

Fabio Borini

The former AS Roma man is another man on the Daily Star’s list of players Liverpool are looking to offload and is another forward who has failed to net consistently for the Anfield outfit.

Borini has managed just two goals in 25 Premier League appearances though did impress whilst on loan at Sunderland. The 24-year-old turned down a £14 million permanent move to the Black Cats [via Liverpool Echo] in the summer of 2014.

Rickie Lambert

The veteran forward arrived last summer after five hugely successful seasons at Southampton and was unable to secure a regular foothold in the Liverpool starting eleven.

The 33-year-old England man was handed just seven Premier League starts, netting two goals, and is another linked with a move away from Anfield, with newly-promoted AFC Bournemouth believed to be keen on his services [via Daily Mirror].

Jose Enrique

The Spanish left-back saw his starting spot handed to fellow countryman Alberto Moreno and has also struggled with injuries in recent seasons; he is surely now deemed ‘surplus to requirements’.

The former Newcastle United man hasn’t hit the level of form he reached at St James’ Park, but could be a valuable asset for another EPL side, if he can begin to rediscover his former quality.

Luis Alberto

The final player listed by the Daily Star, and a player who’s Liverpool career hasn’t ever really got going.

Liverpool brought in the youngster from Sevilla in 2013 for £6.8 million, but Alberto failed to make a Premier League start in his first season on Merseyside and was loaned out to Malaga last season.
