Where would he come in the top ten if this went through though? The Red Devils have brought in some big fees in their time…

10) Alan Smith, £6.7m to Newcastle United, 2007

Converted to a midfielder by Sir Alex Ferguson, and never looked the same for it afterwards. However, this didn’t stop the Magpies splashing out for the injury prone former Leeds man.

9) Paul Ince, £7m to Inter Milan, 1995

One of the crop of older players that Fergie let go to allow room for the ‘class of 92’ to take centre stage, it was a big call to let the England international go. Luckily it seemed to pay off, judging by the massive trophy haul that followed at Old Trafford.

8) Andy Cole, £7.5m to Blackburn Rovers, 2001

A great poacher in his time, forming a brilliant partnership with Dwight Yorke up front. However, with Ruud van Nistlerooy arriving at United, there was no room for the striker and he was duly moved on.

7) Gabriel Heinze, £8.1m to Real Madrid, 2007

One of several moves to the Bernabeu in this top ten, and the Argentina international was sold after struggling to find a place in the team.

6) Ruud van Nistelrooy, £10.3m to Real Madrid, 2006

Possibly the best out and out finisher the Premier League has ever seen, this didn’t stop Sir Alex moving him on when the Dutchman started agitating for a move. Luckily for United a certain Cristiano Ronaldo was about to make some waves.
5) Juan Sebastian Veron, £15m to Chelsea, 2003

Regularly mentioned as one of the biggest flops the top flight has seen, the Red Devils did very well to get this much for the midfielder. Not only this, but the Argentina international failed at Stamford Bridge as well to weaken their rivals!

4) Jaap Stam, £15.25m to Lazio, 2001

Surprisingly sold after Ferguson became unhappy with allegations in his autobiography. It may have been a good decision though, as the centre-back was caught using steroids in Italy.

3) Danny Welbeck, £16m to Arsenal, 2014

Many thought it was a mistake from Louis van Gaal to let the youngster go to the Emirates last summer, but this fee is looking very good after he scored just four goals in 25 Premier League appearances last season.

2) David Beckham, £25m to Real Madrid, 2003

‘Goldenballs’ was sold after the infamous episode where Sir Alex Ferguson allegedly threw a boot at his star player in the changing room after a disappointing performance. Wasn’t a bad fee to receive though, especially back in 2003.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo, £80m to Real Madrid, 2009

The only transfer that De Gea doesn’t have a possibility of eclipsing, the move even looked like it was worth it for Los Blancos. The Portuguese has fired them to every competition possible and, if it wasn’t for Lionel Messi at Barcelona, would be widely regarded as the best player in the world.
