The League Two side have handed a second chance to the 22-year-old, whose contract with the Foxes was terminated after the part he played in a racist orgy came to light.
Smith—along with Tom Hopper and James Pearson, the son of Leicester manager Nigel Pearson—were filmed engaging in sex acts in a Thai hotel room during the club’s end-of-season tour of the nation.
During the video, the players were pictured racially abusing the women involved, with one of the players naming one of the ladies a ‘slit eye’.
Naturally, the incident was viewed particularly unfavourably by the club management and, being owned by Thai billionaire Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and his son Aiyawatt, the video release brought major embarrassment for the club—marring their unexpected Premier League survival.
The club had little choice but to sack the three, although Leicester’s loss may prove to be Northampton’s gain.
“I’m aware this signing will create debate,” said Hatters coach Chris Wilder, speaking to the club’s official website.
“Adam was involved in an incident at Leicester was very wrong and he knows that better than anyone. He paid a price for that, he has apologised and is ashamed of what happened,” he continued.
“But we also live in a society where, as long as people show genuine remorse, admit their mistake, learn from it and apologise then they deserve a second chance. Adam knows that and he is determined to take this chance.
“He is a very good goalkeeper, and one who needs to be in and around a first team place to push himself forward and I am sure he will prove a good addition.”
