The Dutch international moved to Stamford Bridge two years ago but having suffered a major anterior cruciate ligament injury the 22 year old joined AC Milan on a season long loan deal.

The creative midfielder failed to garner regular first team action at the San Siro and Jose Mourinho is likely to farm out the former Vitesse Arnhem man this summer.

Newcastle United are keen to land van Ginkel though it’s believed some Italian sides are also interested.

The Magpies would be able to offer the Blues star regular first team action and Mourinho may prefer the player to be sent out to a Premier League side in order to secure experience in the English top tier.

Newcastle United narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship this season, John Carver’s side securing a 2-0 win over West Ham on the final day of the season to stay up, and owner Mike Ashley is said to be looking to appoint Steve McClaren as the club’s new permanent boss.
