Harry Kane transfer: Tottenham should take £50m part-ex Man United bid and run

If Goal.com‘s exclusive report is be believed and Manchester United are really preparing to go all out to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer in a deal worth £50m, then Spurs should bite their hands off.

Not only would the north London outfit be getting great value for a relatively unproven player, Goal.com add that United boss Louis van Gaal could also throw in as many as three of his first-team players as part of the deal – Adnan Januzaj, Javier Hernandez and Nani.

Given it was another slightly disappointing campaign at White Hart Lane, with new manager Mauricio Pochettino struggling to get his side playing consistently and missing out on that longed-for top four place once again, the club cannot really afford to be picky, and they certainly can’t be pinning all their hopes on a player who may well prove to be a one-season wonder.

We’ve seen players like Kane before – most recently, Michu at Swansea City appeared from nowhere and briefly looked like a world beater with an incredible scoring run; in the 2012/13 season the Spaniard scored 22 goals in all competitions for the Swans, including in the semi-finals and final of the Capital One Cup as the Welsh side won the competition. Since then, however, Michu has scored just six times in two years.

Kane may well prove to be the real deal and has time on his side to show that he can improve, but it seems more than likely that the England youngster will suffer a dip at some point, meaning his value inevitably goes down. If Tottenham don’t accept a £50m offer for the forward while he’s at the top of his game, they may never get a better deal for him.

Of course, Spurs are already short of quality up front and would need to address that even more if their top scorer did leave, but Hernandez would be a great addition, with the underrated Mexican always showing a real nose for goal wherever he’s been if he’s just given the chances. Nani has also been a reliable goalscorer throughout his career, despite a dip in confidence in recent seasons, while Januzaj is an outstanding prospect who would give Pochettino’s side a little more in midfield.

Tottenham may want to move away from their reputation of being a selling club, but their record actually shows they seem to know when best to let their players go. Even Gareth Bale has looked hideously overpriced after his move to Real Madrid (which cost £85.3m, according to BBC Sport), and he was certainly more established when he left White Hart Lane than Kane is now.
