Arsenal chase €17m World Cup-winning defender
Inter Milan are also supposed to to be interested in the Brazil international, but are unable to match the midfielder’s £33 million asking price. The Bundesliga outfit are asking for the full release clause of the 27-year-old after only signing him two seasons ago. He has since become a key player for manager Dieter Hecking.
Gustavo has played 78 appearances and 11 goals in the two campaigns, and he has been very important in Die Wolfe’s rise to second in the German top flight. This has piqued the interest of the Premier League trio as well as their Ligue 1 counterparts.
Arsenal may be keen on the centre-mid to play in the middle of the park with Francis Coquelin. The Frenchman has risen to prominence since arriving back at the club from a loan at Charlton, but needs a player alongside him to create a strong midfield partnership at the Emirates.
Meanwhile United may need a defensively minded midfielder to take over from Michael Carrick in his advancing years. The 33-year-old was still playing well last time round, but surely doesn’t have many years left in him.
