It is Santos’ belief that they should have received a lot more money than the €17.1 million they were paid two years ago when the superstar moved from South America to Europe.

Santos claim they should have received at least £83 million for the player.

Neymar has been one of the Barcelona stars this season, combining with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to give the Catalan giants the La Liga title.

He was also one of the standout players of last summer’s World Cup, though he missed their 7-1 humiliation against Germany in the semi final after being ruled out with a back injury.

Santos president Modesto Roma Jr told a press conference that the club “needed redress for the damage caused to the club”, adding that he hoped the problem would soon be resolved.
