The 22-year-old has played 34 times for the Bundesliga side this season, helping them to one of the best defensive records in the division. They conceded 40 goals in the whole 34 game season, the same as FC Schalke, and two less than Borussia Dortmund. The centre-back has been at the heart of the back line throughout.

Spurs will be hoping the Austria international can bring some of this solidity to their defence, which has been terrible during the current campaign. They have let in 53 goals so far, and only Leicester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Burnley, and QPR have conceded more. All five of those teams have either been relegated or been involved in the scrap to avoid going down.

So it is an imperative that manager Mauricio Pochettino brings in some defensive reinforcements. Wimmer will likely cost about £5 million, and is probably just the start of their business this summer.

The defender said: “I go to Tottenham to go to the next level of my career. It is the next step in my development. I don’t mind if they play next season in the Europa League.”
