7) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
Not quite the type of midfielder Arsenal need, but Juventus’ Arturo Vidal has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium after this summer’s Copa America tournament. With plenty of attacking midfielders already on the books, it’s hard to see how the Chilean international would fit in.
6) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)
With Arsenal already having the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott who can play in the wide areas, Arsenal probably don’t need to blow the bulk of their transfer budget on Liverpool attacker Raheem Sterling, who looks an expensive gamble so early on in his career.
5) Hector Moreno (Espanyol)
A defender would no doubt be useful for Arsenal, but they could perhaps aim higher than Espanyol’s Hector Moreno this summer, with Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel and Calum Chambers already decent options for the Gunners in that part of the pitch. Only a Mats Hummels or a Diego Godin type would be a real upgrade worth investing in.
4) Petr Cech (Chelsea)
With Arsenal in need of a new goalkeeper next season, Chelsea’s Petr Cech ranks fairly high among the club’s main targets, with neither Wojciech Szczesny nor David Ospina really looking good enough as long-term options between the sticks.
3) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)
A superb midfielder who has been one of the best in his position in the Premier League this season, Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin should be another high contender for Arsenal in terms of their top targets this summer, with a defensive midfielder urgently needed at the Emirates Stadium.
2) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
Slightly ahead of Schneiderlin on this list, Real Madrid’s highly experienced midfield star Sami Khedira should also be a top priority for the Gunners due to being available on a free. The German international has also won all there is to win in the game with Bundesliga and La Liga titles, the Champions League and the World Cup, giving some much-needed know-how to this youthful Arsenal squad that needs to become a force in the big competitions again.
1) Jackson Martinez (Porto)
With Olivier Giroud unconvincing up front for Arsenal this season, Porto striker Jackson Martinez is arguably the most important signing the club could make this year. The highly prolific Colombian international looks a major upgrade on Giroud and Danny Welbeck, whose poor form, particularly in the big games, has really held Arsenal back from becoming serious title challengers and closing the gap on Chelsea.
