The 22-year-old will officially join the North London club on July 1st, when the transfer window opens. The arrival of the centre-back could spell the end of Vlad Chiriches’ and Federico Fazio’s Spurs careers, both of whom have been in poor form this season.

Meanwhile Wimmer has been a key part of an FC Koln defence which has only conceded 38 goals in 33 matches during the current campaign. This is the joint fifth best in the Bundesliga, and very impressive for a team which is 12th in the division. As a result £4.2 million could be a bargain for the defender.

Tottenham certainly need to reinforce their back line, having let in 53 goals in their 37 games so far. Only Leicester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and QPR have worse records in the top flight, all of whom have been involved in the relegation battle at times. This could be the first move from manager Mauricio Pochettino to deal with this problem.
