Kelly was only appointed by the League One side last week, but the 35-year-old has endured a troubled start to his reign at Boundary Park.
Kelly, a former Northern Irish U21 international, who featured for Carlisle United and York City during a modest playing career, has already had to deny suggestions that he supports the Irish Republican Army and the fierce dedication to a belief in one united Ireland.
Oldham contacted the police upon learning of the threats received by the coach, and subsequently issued a statement, according to BBC Sport.
“Oldham Athletic AFC are aware of threats made against individuals connected with the club.
“These matters have been passed to the police and the club will be making no further comments on this subject.”
The appointment has generated much controversy for a club not shy of creating a storm or two, particularly with their recent efforts to sign former Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, who was convicted of rape in 2012.
Supporters of the club have threatened to boycott the team’s matches should Kelly—who has been interim coach since Lee Johnson left in February—stay in charge, and it remains to be seen if the rookie coach will be able to get fans back on side.
