Montreal now lead 2-1 on aggregate and are just 45 minutes from an historic first title, though America still only need one goal to force the game to extra time.
The goal came in the seventh minute through Andres Romero. After some neat work on the wing by former San Lorenzo playmaker Ignacio Piatti saw the ball arrive at the 25 year old’s feet, and he danced away from three challenges before firing under America keeper Moises Munoz.
Moments later Dario Benedetto hit the bar for the visitors, but there has been few other opportunities.
The referee has already dished out five yellow cards and the game has descended into an ill tempered affair.
If Montreal can hold on they would become the first non-Mexican side to win the title since Deportivo Saprissa beat Pumas UNAM in 2005.
