The Reds boss was speaking following a disappointing weekend in the Premier League, with his side dominating the possession and chances in their game against West Bromwich Albion, but coming away with only a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns.
Rodgers has hinted that this issue needs to be addressed, while speculation has recently been hotting up over the Dutch international’s future after his superb season in the Eredivisie.
A prolific scorer from out wide, Depay has 24 goals in all competitions and could be the answer to Liverpool’s problems, and while the Northern Irishman did not confirm either way whether he was chasing the 21-year-old, he strongly hinted that he was the kind of player he’d be looking to bring in this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“I can’t confirm either way – you know me, in terms of speculation of players,” he explained. “The kid is a very talented player, of course. But I wouldn’t like to confirm either way.
“It’s clear we need the goal threat for next year. There’s going to be a whole raft of players that I’m sure will be looked at, then will be up to the club if they’re affordable and if they’re available.
“We’ve identified that [a striker] as a priority. We’ll have to see availability first, and then take it from there.”
