The Gunners eventually brought in Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a club-record move on deadline day, but were panned in this piece in the Daily Mail for passing up on some players who have gone on to prove awful buys for their clubs since.
Among the names mentioned are Tottenham Hotspur striker Roberto Soldado, brought in for £26m and with only seven league goals to his name in two seasons since his arrival. Other attacking players Arsenal supposedly should have signed include Manchester City flop Stevan Jovetic and Wilfried Zaha, who is already back at Crystal Palace after failing to make an impression at Manchester United.
Other amusing players suggested are Liverpool pair Simon Mignolet and Dejan Lovren, who have both at times been regarded as the team’s worst performers this season, while Iago Aspas also gets a shout despite just one dreadful season at Anfield before being sent back to La Liga on loan.
In fairness, there are some decent players mentioned, such as Marouane Fellaini, Willian and Victor Wanyama, but it just goes to show how hard it can be to tell who is worth spending money on and who isn’t.
