The 26-year-old isn’t the only player the Red Devils have loaned out to get first team action this season. Here are six who have done well enough in their temporary deals that Louis van Gaal could give them a first team chance next time round…

6) Javier Hernandez, Real Madrid

Before Wednesday evening the Mexico international had not been having the best time at the Bernabeu. The Champions League match was only his fourth start of the campaign, and he has managed just five goals for the Galacticos. However, the goal against their fierce local rivals showed the poaching instincts that the striker has become famous for. With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao struggling at Old Trafford, could he be in for a return?

5) Angelo Henriquez, Dinamo Zagreb

A brilliant 13 league goals in 14 appearances for the Croatian side have shown that the 21-year-old knows where the net is. He has also grabbed 3 goals in six Europa League games, and could well be serious competition for the United regulars next season.

4) Reece James, Huddersfield

The 21-year-old is a left-back who has been on loan at various lower division sides since making his Red Devils debut in their League Cup loss to MK Dons back in August. He has been impressing at Huddersfield recently, with five Championship appearances and his first senior goal.

3) Jesse Lingard, Derby County

Older than some may expect at 22, but still capable of making an impact at United if given the chance. He featured for the first team at wing-back earlier in the season, but has been playing in his natural attacking midfield role in the Championship. Two goals in 12 games for the Rams since returning from a serious injury isn’t a bad return.

2) Guillermo Varela, Real Madrid Castilla

Perhaps tainted by being David Moyes’ first signing at Old Trafford, but the full-back has quietly been doing well with Real Madrid’s ‘B’ side. He has played 26 times for the Spanish team, and could be serious competition for Luke Shaw in the next campaign.

1) Nani, Sporting Lisbon

What a difference your surroundings can make! The much maligned winger scored four times for the Portuguese side in the Champions League group stages. Could he make the same impact for the Red Devils in the competition next time round?
