Rafael Benitez reveals he tried to sign former Chelsea winger

The Spaniard has recently been linked to the Manchester City job by the Daily Star, but it seems that he might be in consideration by Sampdoria if current manager Sinisa Mihajlovic leaves. That is, if he can shed the pounds! Manchester United and Everton fans have chanted about the 55-year-old’s weight in the past, and it now seems that even club presidents are getting involved.

Massimo Ferrero said: “I could take Benitez, but I’d have to take him to see a dietician first. Anyway, if Mihajlovic does leave, I’ve already got a replacement. You all say he’s leaving, even if I don’t know anything about it.”

With Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers under pressure at Anfield after losing to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi finals, Benitez may be linked back to Merseyside before long. He managed to win the Champions League during his last tenure there, but was never able to taste Premier League success.

However, after going on to take charge at rivals Chelsea, the Serie A boss may not be welcomed back with open arms as some expect. Some supporters may not be able to forgive their ex-manager taking a competitor to the Europa League title should he be reappointed at Anfield.
