The veteran Toffees star believes his younger team-mate would be well advised to avoid a move to his old club, with chances for young players often limited in recent times at the Etihad Stadium.

Still, Barkley’s rise to stardom in the last couple of seasons has seen him become a highly regarded talent, with City mentioned as potential suitors for the 21-year-old England international.

Barry has played for City and became a key player for the club, though he feels it would be too early for Barkley to make a similar move, with the player still developing and learning, with Goodison Park looking the best place for him to do that as he is guaranteed more first-team opportunities.

Speaking about his team-mate’s future and a possible move to City, Barry is quoted in The Times as saying: “I think he’s still too young to make that move. His development is better served by staying here. He’s still learning the game. He’s got the right manager here [Roberto Martínez] to push him to the next level. As soon as he reaches that next level, there’s another decision to be made. At the moment, I think it’s too early.”
