Manchester United transfer rumours
20. Burnley – £21.5m
The Clarets have found life in the Premier League difficult, and with a wage bill of £21.5m and a turnover of just £19.6m, it’s no wonder the club are struggling.
19. Leicester City – £26.6m
Like Burnley, the Foxes are facing the serious threat of relegation.
18. Hull City – £43.3m
The Tigers have almost double their wage bill from last season – but it has done little to improve their position in the Premier League. However, it’s a considerable sign of intent from Hull City chiefs.
17. Crystal Palace – £45.7m
The Eagles have been in excellent form since Alan Pardew replaced Neil Warnock in the managerial hot-seat, and the club certainly look to be settling into the Premier League.
16. Southampton – £55.2m
The Saints are an excellent advert for England’s top flight, as they continue to prove that money isn’t the be all and end all in football.
15. Stoke City – £60.6m
While not the most liked manager in England, Mark Hughes is certainly managing to get the best out of his Potters team.
14. Swansea City – £48.1m
The Swans are another club over-achieving with a small wage bill in comparison to their domestic rivals. The selling of Wilfried Bony was an excellent piece of business from the Jacks.
13. West Ham United – £63.9m
The loan deal for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song was a serious message of what’s expected at the club from the Hammers hierarchy, and after toying with a European qualification spot earlier in the season, we can expect some more big signings in the summer.
12. West Bromwich Albion – £65.4m
Based on their wage bill – the Baggies are achieving no less or more than they should on paper.
11. Aston Villa – £69.3m
Despite looking destined for relegation early on in the season, new boss Tim Sherwood has dramatically turned things around – and their wage bill is proof that Paul Lambert was seriously underachieving.
10. Everton – £69.3m
The Toffees have increased their bill by £6m this year – but money doesn’t always buy success, as the club have tumbled down the table.
9. Sunderland – £69.5m
A truly staggering figure for the Black Cats – surely there must be some changes in the summer.
8. Queens Park Rangers – £75.3m
Unsurprisingly, the Hoops are the league’s biggest under-achievers with a truly staggering wage bill, as they look set for another return to the Championship.
7. Newcastle United – £78.3m
Another club whose wages just do not match up with their current poor position in the Premier League.
6. Tottenham Hotspur – £100.4m
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy doesn’t seem to be spending his money too wisely, as the club continue to fail in their bid to threaten the top four.
5. Liverpool – £144m
The Reds’ high wage bill – which has increased £13m since last season – is evidence of the club’s desire to move forward, but it hasn’t paid off this term.
4. Arsenal – £166.4m
Despite Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to give in to wage demands, the Gunners have one of the highest bills in the country.
3. Chelsea – £192.7m
According to financial figures, the Blues are actually overachieving, and credit must go to Jose Mourinho.
2. Manchester City £205m
There is no surprise that the Citizens have such a high wage bill – but, unbelievably, this figure is actually lower than it was last season due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
1. Manchester United – £215.8m
The likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie earn an incredible amount of money with the Red Devils, and Louis van Gaal’s summer signings will have seriously added to the figure this term.
