With Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp announcing he is to leave the club at the end of this season earlier this week, here’s a look at five facts you might not have known about the German tactician as he is linked with a move to the Premier League with either Arsenal or Manchester City.

1) He was a one-club man
Jurgen Klopp started his managerial career with Mainz, but they are also the club he spent his entire playing career with prior to moving into coaching. Starting out as a striker, the German later moved into defence, making 337 league appearances for the club between 1989 and 2001.
2) He wrote a thesis about walking
In 1995, Klopp completed a Sports Science diploma at Goethe University Frankfurt, and wrote his final thesis on walking – clearly a more complex topic than you’d think…
3) Led Dortmund to their first ever double
With a league and cup double in the 2011/12 season, Klopp led Dortmund to this incredible feat for the first time in their history, turning the club into a force for a few seasons after initially taking over when they were barely contenders to qualify for Europe.
4) Achieved best points total in the Bundesliga
Until this record was broken soon after by Bayern Munich, Klopp led Dortmund to a points tally of 81 in the 2011/12 season, which was at the time an all-time best in the history of the German top flight.
5) His son played for Dortmund
Klopp has two sons, and one actually played for the Dortmund youth team until being forced to retire young due to injury problems – maybe there’s more to come from the Klopp family in football?
