The point hardly helps either club; Lorient, who finish the weekend in 16th place, are now level on points with 18th-place Toulouse and the bottom three. Lens, similarly, are bottom of the table, cut off from safety, and need victories to close the gap between themselves and 17th.
Despite being beneath their opponents in the league, the Northerners were by much the better side and enjoyed large spells of possession.
However, as has often been a problem throughout the season, Lens were unable to create quality chances for their strikers to finish. They are the third-lowest goals-scorers in the division and their impotency up front will surely prove critical to their relegation.
Lamine Kone was Lorient’s key performer in the heart of the defence, while Benjamin Lecomte ensured Les Merlus avoided defeat with a fine save from Wylan Cyprien.
