The Telegraph named his best ever XI which included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Claude Makelele, John Terry and Frank Lampard.

All those players listed above, Mourinho inherited and improved, but he is not shy to get the chequebook out and splash the cash.

Take a look at the Portuguese manager’s all time XI featuring his most expensive buys in the transfer market.

GK) Diego Lopez

Brought in as cover for Iker Casillas and excelled as the number one so much that he kept out the legendary Madrid man even when he returned to fitness.

*Petr Cech cost between £7m-9m but that signing was agreed before Mourinho was appointed manager.

Cost: £13.2m (via BBC)

Mourinho’s very first signing for Chelsea, reliable full-back and a very good acquisition for the Blues.

CB) Kurt Zouma

This transfer somewhat slipped under the radar last January, one for the future but has already shown on several occasions this season that he is ready to be called upon in the present.

CB) Ricardo Carvalho

Cost: £19.85 (via BBC)

Another one of Mourinho’s first signings in his first Chelsea spell, went on to forge a successful partnership with John Terry.

After a long drawn out transfer saga in the summer of 2005, Mourinho finally got his man for just under £25m and turned out to be a terrific signing.

Tottenham tried their best to hold on to the Croatian star in 2012, but once Madrid and Mourinho came calling it was inevitable that Modric was Bernabeu-bound.

MC) Cesc Fabregas

Cost: £27m (via Mirror Online)

One transfer that many believed would never happen – a former Arsenal player signing for London rivals Chelsea.

After seeing his side struggle to create many chances in the previous season, Mourinho rectified that by bringing in one of the best playmakers in the world.

AMR) Willian

Cost: £32m (via Mail Online)

For a while it seemed the Brazilian was heading to either Tottenham or Liverpool until Mourinho swooped in with an unbelievable offer.

AML) Angel Di Maria

Cost: €25M (via Telegraph)

Has since moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United, but Mourinho shelled out €25M for the winger from Portuguese side Benfica after the 2010 World Cup.

ST) Diego Costa

Cost: £32m (via Sky Sports)

Mourinho’s joint biggest transfer to date, eclipsing Andriy Shevchenko who cost £2m more, brought in to score the goals and fire the Blues to a first league title since 2010 and is on course to do exactly that.
