Arsenal star ahead of Chelsea forward and other rivals as Premier League’s most lethal marksman

Arsenal are currently the Premier League’s form team. Seven straight wins have taken Arsene Wenger’s side from top-four contenders to long-shot title challengers. So it is not surprise to see one of their players as the top flight’s most lethal goalscorer when it comes to minutes per strike, not including penalties, with a minimum of five goals.

Manchester City have a representative in the shortlist, but oddly it’s not the league’s third-highest scorer, Sergio Aguero.

Here is the top five in the list compiled by the London Evening Standard:

5- Frank Lampard (Manchester City 0.69 goals per 90 mins)

The former Chelsea midfielder’s poor form has coincided with his current side’s slip away from the battle for the league’s summit. However, at the start of the campaign, his performances had many people questioning whether the Blues should have ever let him go, especially after scoring a late equaliser against Jose Mourinho’s men.

His tally of five goals in twenty-five appearances doesn’t seem too impressive, but he has only started four games. His last goal came against Sunderland on New Year’s Day.

4- Harry Kane (Tottenham 0.73 goals per 90 mins)

Harry Kane has been the surprise package of the season, and currently ties as the league’s leading scorer. He already has nineteen strikes to his name, having started the campaign mostly as a substitute, who eventually was handed a starting place by Mauricio Pochettino.

His performances have recently led to his first international call-up – and goal – and being awarded the captain’s armband for their goalless draw with Burnley.

3- Papiss Cisse (Newcastle 0.82 goals per 90 mins)

The 29-year-old’s season has been overshadowed by the spitting incident involving Jonny Evans during the defeat against Manchester United last month, but nevertheless, he’s been Newcastle’s leading scorer this year.

With eleven goals, he has over double of his nearest teammate, Ayoze Perez, and you could imagine that John Carver will be desperate to get the striker back into the fold.

2- Diego Costa (Chelsea 0.84 goals per 90 mins)

The former Atletico Madrid striker made a blistering start to his Premier League career, bagging seven goals in his first four games. With nineteen strikes, he joins Harry Kane at the top of the goalscoring charts. Seven games in all competitions without a goal earlier in the year had Chelsea fans worried, however, he put those fears to bed with two in two against Southampton and Hull.

More worryingly, he limped off during the victory over Stoke with an apparent recurrence of an old hamstring injury.

1- Olivier Giroud (Arsenal 0.87 goals per 90 mins)

After a fairly quiet start to his season, Giroud is now hitting the form that has helped Arsenal just about sneak into the title picture. Nine Premier League goals since the turn of the year have guided the Gunners to seven straight wins, and made him the top flight’s most lethal goalscorer.
