The 31-year-old made himself a hero at Old Trafford in his first season after his £24m move from Arsenal, scoring thirty goals, and helping Sir Alex Ferguson to the Premier League title in his final season in the dugout. And while last season he produced another decent return – eighteen strikes – he was unable to prevent the club missing out entirely on European football ahead of this season.
This campaign has been the Dutchman’s most disappointing, despite working under countryman, and former national coach, Louis van Gaal. Injuries have interrupted much of his year, and he at times, has looked completely bereft of confidence. He looks set for his lowest total for a season since his move up north.
With his contract up at the end of next season, van Gaal is keen to cash in on the forward this summer, so he can make room for Paris Saint-Germain striker, Edinson Cavani, according to the Daily Mirror.
