Rennes, on the other hand, took a major step closer to safety by opening up a ten-point gap between they and the bottom three.
The home side opened the scoring on 17 minutes as Edson Mexer headed home Paul-Georges Ntep’s superb corner delivery.
Lorient had their chances, but they conceded a second just before the break when former Paris Saint-Germain defender Sylvain Armand volleyed in from a corner.
While Lorient sought to come out strongly after the pause, their fate was sealed on 50 minutes when Abdoulaye Doucoure profited from some more excellent work from Ntep.
The defeat was Les Merlus’ fourth in their last fifth matches and, with Toulouse also losing, they remain two points from safety.
In their next two matches, Sylvain Ripoll’s side travel to bottom club Racing Club de Lens, before welcoming Le TFC to the Stade du Moustoir on April 18. These two games will surely prove to be critical as they look to preserve their top-flight status.
