Antoine Kombouare’s side began Sunday at the foot of the Ligue 1 table following FC Metz’s victory over fellow relegation strugglers Toulouse on Saturday.
For long stretches of their meeting with Bordeaux they matched their opponents who, for their part, still harbour hopes of European qualification.
However, it was the home side who took the lead on 80 minutes when Brazilian Mariano finished beneath Rudy Riou.
Falling behind appeared to spark the embattled visitors into life and they equalised moments later when Pablo Chavarria outmuscled the bumbling Cedric Yambere before firing past Cedric Carrasso.
Lens thought they had secured at least a point, and considering their plight at the base of the table, pushed forward to seek an unlikely winner.
This may well have cost them, as Maurice-Belay exposed some disorganised Lens defending to play a neat interplay with Isaac Kiese Thelin before firing home.
It was a cruel climax for Lens, who remain nine points from safety.
