This news raises the proposition of the Young Lions sending a very strong team to play at the tournament in the Czech Republic. With players from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool making up most of the XI, could this team win this year and then challenge for the senior title at France 2016?

GK) Jack Butland, 22-years-old, Stoke City

He might not be getting much game time behind Asmir Begovic at the Potters, but the goalie is seemingly still the only promising English goalie eligible to play.

RB) Calum Chambers, 20-years-old, Arsenal

Recently dropped from the senior set up to the Under 21’s, the versatile defender could well be a centre-back in the future but could be stuck out at full-back here.

LB) Luke Shaw, 19-years-old, Manchester United

Maybe not the most successful since arriving at the Red Devils for big money in before this season, but still the heir to Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole for the national team.

CB) John Stones, 20-years-old, Everton

If you ask many Toffees fans they will probably tell you that the former Barnsley man should have been chosen by Roy Hodgson ahead of Phil Jagielka. However, he wasn’t and will possibly get more game time in the younger group.

CB) Phil Jones, 23-years-old, Manchester United

Started for alongside Gary Cahill against Lithuania on Friday so may be wanted by the seniors for their matches, but at the same time some tournament experience could do the defender good.

CM) Jack Wilshere, 23-years-old, Arsenal

If injuries hadn’t been a problem for the midfielder then he may well be a regular in the men’s team by now. As it is he is on the sidelines again, and some time with the Under 21’s may be a good part of his rehabilitation.

CM) Ross Barkley, 21-years-old, Everton

Not having the same impact this season as he did in the last, but still one of the most talented young players in the country. The Blues ace could regain some confidence in Southgate’s team.

LM) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 21-years-old, Arsenal

Very promising at times but also frustrating at others, the winger is still likely to become an important part of the England team.

RM) Raheem Sterling, 20-years-old, Liverpool

Contract controversy apart, the youngster has been key for the Reds since emerging last season. Getting the winger to play in the tournament after being a regular for the seniors may be difficult.

ST) Saido Berahino, 21-years-old, West Brom

Having a great season for the Baggies, and it would be interesting to see how the forward links up with Harry Kane.

ST) Harry Kane, 21-years-old, Tottenham

29 goals in a season is nothing to sniff at, and the announcement that the Spurs star will be playing is a big statement from England.
