Marian Pahars’s Latvia looked lethal on the counter attack and had few qualms with letting the home side come on to them before launching forward on the break.
It was through this method that they took the lead in the match, as Aleksejs Visnakov opened the scoring on 30 minutes.
During the second period, Pavel Vrba’s outfit attacked the Latvian goal relentlessly, but just as it looked like they would succumb to an unlikely defeat, Vaclav Pilar touched in a shot parried by visiting keeper Andris Vanins.
Plasil started the match, but only managed a half of action and was at fault for the Latvian opener. He was replaced by eventual goalscorer Pilar at the break.
