One fan standing close to those who caused the incident filmed them picking up the flare and waving it above their heads and chanting before throwing it onto the field of play and striking Akinfeev in the face.

Following the attack, the referee suspended the proceedings whilst the CSKA Moscow man was stretchered off the field and rushed to hospital.

Surrounding supporters seem shocked with many gesticulating towards the culprits, but it remains to be seen whether UEFA can identify the perpetrators but footage like this will surely help.

The match was eventually abandoned after 67 minutes when another Russia player, Dmitri Kombarov, was hit by an object thrown from the crowd that sparked a brawl between players.

Russia have since called for a technical defeat to be awarded to Montenegro according to the Guardian and say that the match should have been abandoned after Akinfeev was attacked and not allowed to continue.

Montenegro FA general secretary Momir Djurdjevac agreed the match should have stopped with the Guardian also claiming he called fans hypocrites and barbarians for their actions.

However, it’s unclear whether he believes Russia should get an automatic win.
